Omi's Peppermint Cookies

Temperature: 375 F
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon peppermint extract (or 1 /4 teaspoon peppermint oil if you can get it)
1 Tablespoon Hirschhornsalz (baking ammonia or ammonium carbonate)
1 teaspoon baking powder
water (boiling)
vanillin sugar
Dissolve Hirschhornsaltz in 1/2 Tablespoon boiling water. Mix baking powder with flour before adding to dough. After adding 3rd cup of flour, add Hirschhornsaltz. Dough should be soft enough to still be able to stir with spoon. Refrigerate dough over night. Bake in balls or roll out and bake. Omi usually made balls.
